"All Have Sinned." That's You. That's Me.
What is SIN? Simply put, "It is rebellion against God.
We live in a society where the concept of sin has become entangled in legalistic arguments over RIGHT and WRONG. Many consider sin as a violation of the Ten Commandments. Even then, people tend to think of murder, or adultery as "major" sins compared to cursing, idolatry or cheating.
The truth is that sin, as defined in the original translations of the Bible, means "to miss the mark." This mark is the standard of perfection established by God and evidenced by Jesus. Viewed in that light, it's clear that we are ALL sinners. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." It's useless to compare yourself to others. You and I fail to meet God's standard through our own actions. This is by God's perfect design. Only through our weakness do we start to rely on Jesus.
It all started with the "original" sin of Adam and Eve. God gave them free reign of everything in the Garden of Eden except for one thing. One "DO NOT!" God said, "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Like the "Wet Paint. Do Not Touch" sign, they acted on the tempting by the serpent (Satan) and ate of the tree. Mistake! Disobedience to God. Now came the "surely die" part. This is where everything created by God for man would now die. Death came to stars, plants, sea creatures, animals, and people. This is where sin began for humanity and continues until today. We just can't shake it, can we? Tragically, sin in ANY amount will distance us from God. Let's look at sin more closely.
The Apostle Paul told us, "The trouble is with me (all of us), for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it."
He's telling us that the Law of God is what? GOOD (actually it's perfect). But there is SIN living in us and we're a slave to it. All of us have a sinful nature. How do I know? I didn't teach my children, nor did my parents teach me to lie, steal, or get angry. Our sin nature took care of that. Do I sin today even after being saved? Absolutely, but I don't want to. The good part is that God's grace took care of my past, present and future sin. In other words, I'm a SAVED SINNER and I am Heaven bound.
Want to hear some of the sins I still carry around even after my salvation? The sins of sadness, ingratitude, selfishness, despair, jealosy/envy, praylessness, unbelief, carnality, faithlessness, complaining, boredom, worry, pride, uncontrolled tongue, temper. Those are just a few. Am I proud of that? NO! It's my sin nature coming out. Just like Paul, I don't do what is right. I've been called a hypocrite, when in reality I'm a SAVED SINNER humanly sinning even though I don't want to.
Here's both good and bad news about sinners. 1 John 1:8-10 tells us, "If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that His word has no place in our hearts."
The Good News is that once you recognize that you are a sinner, you need to repent and embrace Jesus to be forgiven of your sins. Jesus is the ONLY one who can forgive us because He died and rose again three days later in His victory over sin and death.
"Godly sorrow" is recognizing your sin and being responsible for it. "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." 2 Corinthians 7:10-11 tells us, "For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death. Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right."
Remember the "great gulf" between Lazarus and the Rich Man? Any sin you have with out repentance and relying on Jesus is the dividing between Heaven and Hell.
There are two competing agendas. God's agenda is "life." Satan's agenda is "death." Satan's agenda is DIABOLICAL. Defined as: Extremely wickedor cruel, evil, fiendish, heinous, hellish, vile, vicious, satanic, infernal, demonic, despicable, deplorable.
Good and evil are real. It's not a concept. Choose wisely. Your eternal life depends on it.
Here is the TRUTH.
•You need a Savior for your salvation. No other person or religion can offer that to you except for Jesus Christ. Believe in Him and you receive forgiveness of your sins; you become a child of God; you possess eternal life.
•You will have victory over the temptation of sin. "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me."
•Forgiveness: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from ALL unrighteousness.
•You will have His presence. "Never will I leave you. Never will I forsake you."
•You don't earn your salvation. It is a gift of God. All other religions demand you to DO. Jesus tells you, "DONE!"
